Welcome to Bristol

Dear new Bristol University student,

Congratulations on your offer to study at the University of Bristol; you are in for an amazing experience over the next couple of years, full of not only hard work but new, fun memories! It’s hard to truly prepare for beginning University, as you never truly know what to expect and everyone has a completely different experience, but I hope that a few words of advice might help you.

When I started university three years ago, I didn’t have any experience of living on my own, cooking, washing and the friends I had I’d been friends with since I started secondary school, so I was very nervous about almost everything! However, I moved into halls and made great friends with my flatmates, and within a few days, if not hours, I really felt a sense of belonging which has stayed with my throughout the course of my time in Bristol. So I would say not to be too nervous, it’s good to come to university with an open mind and with a readiness to make new friends, maybe those who you wouldn’t necessarily have got on with previously as the beauty of going to university is that you meet a vast range of people, who may become your best friends or future housemates. This will, in turn, open the door to new experiences; whether that be new recipes learnt from flatmates or new hobbies.

Join lots of societies! Many are free to sign up to and Bristol University offers a great range, from snow sports to pottery! It’s another great way to meet people and you never know, you may end up being voted the president of a society in years to come! Go to events too, the newly decorated students union has a great bar which holds events and there’s always lots on if you read spot the posters around the university, from plays to special lectures.

So that’s it! Don’t spend you’re whole loan on fancy foods do them have to eat toast for the rest of term and don’t leave your laundry until you have no socks left, but embrace your time at University, it’s an amazing opportunity and it really does go very, very quickly, so enjoy it and work hard!

Good luck and have fun!
